Unathu Malar from Paatha Kaanikai

A beautiful song by Visvanathan Ramamurthy. Some songs are old but remain just as mesmerizing. What a wonder, alike this song.

Naana Tholaintha Kathai from Thavamai Thavamirundhu

I caught a glimpse of this music video on Sun Music some time back. Fell in love with song at first sight. The lyrics were simply astounding. This is supposed to be the male version. The duet version is titled Unnai Saranadainthen, and is equally good. But somehow, this one seems more outstanding in my books. And, Padmapriya is one great actress. A true unpretentious Indian beauty.

Saathi Malli Poocharame from Azhagan

One superb movie from yesteryears. Most songs in the movie are pleasing to the ears. And, not to mention, in beautiful Tamil, something that has become rare of lately.

This one is my utmost favourite.

Poongkatrile from Uyire

AR's music direction, Vairamuthu's lyrics and Unni Menon and Swarnalatha wow this song. Lyrics again are just mindblowing.

Thanga Nilavinil from Tirumanam

Earth Day. How sad, that it takes a major climate change for the world to unite. To try and heal her. We have done all possible damage to her. All in the name of development. And, now that she has become fragile, we seek ways to make her a better. Human beings - we are filled with greed and selfishness. With our future in jeopardy, we are looking high and low to a greener world. Absurd yet desperate. Still not late, I believe.
So, this is kind of a toast - to make everyday Earth Day. With simple ways - like turning the tap off while we brush our teeth, using the cycle instead of the car and planting a tree every week.

AM Raja has a wonderful voice that can lullaby the restless of hearts to deep slumber. Legend.

Mun Paniyaa from Nandhaa

Friday. I love this day the most. Maybe the anticipation of weekends drive me to this. Two days of good unwinding and rest. If only they could be extended, I will be one of the most happiest human being. How greedy.

It rained cats and dogs today. After a gap of few days. The weather is cold. And, breezy. Just the way I like it. Mun Paniyaa is best listened on like night this, on a lower volume and replay - with deep concentration in its lyrics. The video is equally beautiful, with picturesque shots of Rameswaram. You do not need be an art lover to appreciate things such as these - just a zealot. Ya, a zealot.

Thendral Vanthu Theendum Bothu from Avatharam

I caught a glimpse of the sun setting this evening, and was she awesome. Bright, fiery, full of zest, humongous, beautiful. With the sea and its strong tidal waves today, and the larger than usual sun to complete the entire picture - intoxicating is what it was. Truly, truly amazing. Reminded me of Kanyakumari.

Life. Is so beautiful yet so shortlived. It is in our hands to make the best of it, while we have the time. Love. Is the best way to fill it. Pure, kind and unreserved ones. Celebrate life.

Wish I could fly to India now. The country that intoxicates me just like the sun did this evening.
Weekdays end tomorrow. Yippied-Di-Ya-Ya.

Un Paarvaiyil from Something Something Unnakum Ennakum

Wow... It is raining. You know, the kind of heavy but breezy and cool rain. Slumber is already calling.

Today was nice. The weather, work. Everything. The sort of day that brings a sense of zeal.
Some people have nice eyes. The one that gazes right into you. Some people have a great smile. The one that makes your heart skip a beat. Some people have both. Beauty is only theoretical. It is the heart that counts the most.

This song is so apt for today.

Ilaiyanila from Payanangal Mudivathillai

Done with Tuesday. Yippie. I love it when the week flies fast. And, it drizzled this morning. What a surprise !! What a blessing !!

Isn't this song just mindblowing ?? One that has never lost its appeal despite the years.

Naan Oru Kulanthai from Padagotti

Mondays are always hard - on everyone. Slow, hectic and tiring. Makes you long for Fridays. Unless, you are on a vacation. Thank God it is about to be over now.

Old songs are always a joy, despite the years. This one is something that I first listened during my teens. Like the way the melody goes. The jolly sort.

Oh Nenjay from Darling, Darling, Darling

All time romantic hit from the eighties. They have a few versions, I believe. With minimal musical instruments but maximum vocal strength and passion, this song is a good listen.

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Vizhikalin Aruginil from Azhagiya Theeye

This is one Tamil movie that I thought, and still think is absolutely amazing. How sad that many failed to appreciate it. A few songs in the movie are good. Like this one for the easy rhythm and romantic lyrics, and not to mention Prasanna's potrayal as the confused house mate.

Hot weather is back. It rained cats and dogs last week. Today is the total opposite. Wish someone would be nice enough to do the rain dance and make it pour - while I go have my afternoon cat nap.

Manasukul Manasukul from Anjaathey

Alas - Friday is here. Have been waiting for it like some lovesick teenager. And, this particular song explains exactly how it feels to be one.

Well, it has been years since I was in that shoes and situation, but it is nice to at least think of it. Reminisce over it. Relish about it. One of the greatest things in life is love and being in it, is just amazing. This song is best listened at night at a lower volume.

Happy Weekend. Happy Listening. Happy Loving.

Oru Kal Oru Kannadi from Siva Manasula Sakthi

The weekdays seem hindered and prolonged. I have an inkling that today should be Friday - however, it is still, only, Thursday. Way over zealous, I guess.

I am an ardent fan of Jeeva. Ever since, Katrathu Thamil (Tamil M.A). Felt that his acting aptitudes in that particular movie were just mind blowing. He proved himself in Raam. But, the former was, simply intense. One that I would say, was his best.

Then came SMS. Siva Manasula Sakthi. In this, Jeeva bowled me over, with his next door boy character. The oh-so-cute boyfriend. The brash and brazen one. And, I have been a fan, since. An ardent, die hard fan.
This song remains an all time favourite.

Vadikaai Maranthathu Yeno from Kalyana Parisu

It is such a wonder that despite the years, hundreds of new playback singers and different music genres, AM Raja sounds as sweet and genuine as ever. This song is so enduring. An example of authentic Tamil music that ought to be listened by all walks of life.

Despite heavy clouds and strong winds - it did not rain. There goes my anticipation. Was dreaming of it pouring cats and dogs. Looks like even a drop of drizzle is in doubt.

Unnai Vida from Virumaandi

This song is beautiful. Like the ride along the Kizhaku Kadarkarai Saalai (East Coast Road) that leads to Chidambaram and its outskirts, from Chennai. The view was awesome - especially, during the wee hours of the morning. In some parts along the road, the glimpse of the sea was breathtaking. Miss India and look forward to going there again - very soon.

No rain today. Argh - is all I want to say.

Ethirpaarthen from Antha Rathiriku Saatchiyilai

We had rain once again. Such a blessing. It has been cold for the last three days or so. Sometimes, we tend to take things for granted. We grumble during the rainy season - that the days are too wet. We moan of the high humidity during the sunny ones. Weird, how we humans now are never satisfied with what we have. This is to celebrate the zeal of life. Ethirpaarthen, naanum - vazhkai-kaaga.

Poongkaatru from Vetri Vizha

This song was one of my favourites during my teenage days. For that romantic but pop feel. For Amala - doesn't she look ravishing ? For such intense lyrics. For the storyline of the movie - something out of the norm those days.

Friday, March 12, 2010

Mazhai Kaala Megam from Vaalvey Maayam

Alas.... it rained. Heavily. Today the weather is cold. Going to bed would not be about rolling and drooling over the Alps, Kulumanali and winter in London. Going to bed would be a breeze.

Charmed by Chennai and Madras Suthi Paarka from May Madham

Chennai. She charmed me. This was the first city that brought me into India. First ones are always special, aren’t they? Same here. Chennai swept me of my feet. Contrastingly. I do not know what it is about Chennai that attracts me so much. I cannot explain the rationale. All I know is that, Chennai absolutely charms me. The mere thought of her puts a Cheshire cat grin on my face.

Known as Madras up until 1996 and located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu is the fifth most populous city in India.

There are so many places in Chennai to visit. So many things to give it a go. Do not let some gloomy Gus daunt you. Take a trip to Singara Chennai with buoyancy and good spirits. Chennai will sure charm you. Just like it did me.

Marina Beach. Golden Beach. Gandhi Beach. Besant Nagar Beach.

Pondy Bazaar. T. Nagar. Panagal Park. Nungambakkam High Road. Spencer Plaza. Panteon Road in Egmore. Stores and boutiques near Cathedral Road.

Filter coffee – anywhere, anytime. Immeasurably delicious Thali Sets. Saravana Bhawan. Vasantha Bhavan. Komalas’s in Kodambakkam. The food court in Spencer’s. Murugan Idli Kadai near Ranganathan Street. Adyar Ananda Bhawan for Indian sweets.

My favourite cuppa - chilled pomegranate juice near Dheenadayalan Street. To die for. I can close my eyes and imagine how tasty it was.
Satyam Cinemas. Santhi Theater. Inox. Mayajaal

Hickinbothams for books. Paperback booksellers along Pondy Bazaar.

Kabaleeswarar Temple. Astalakshmi Temple.

Birla Planetarium. Fort St George. Government Museum. Valluvarkottam. Snake Park. St Thome Cathedral.

The list goes on. Ask any Chennaite, and they will tell you. Or ask a charmed Malaysian like me, and I will - as well.

Go Chennai. Trudge and traipse. You will love her – too.

Song for today - Madras-ai chutti paarka poren.... Poovomaa ???

Maasila Nilave from Ambikapathy

Tuesday. The week seems to be crawling slower than ever.
G. Ramanathan is my favourite yesteryear MD. It is nice to unwind to his songs when life gets busy. Like today.
The week is crawling but my life is busy. How contradicting - but true.
Cheers.

Recommended Tamil Movies of 2009 & Rayilu Vandi from Jayam

Tamil Movies that I watched in 2009 and would recommend people to do too.

1. Pasanga – Beautiful storyline. Everything about this movie was amazing. About enmity blooming into friendship. Two songs to listen to, Anbaaley and Oru Vetkam. One of my favs.
2. Pokkisham – Again, beautiful storyline. Cheran always surprises, doesn’t he ? And, Padmapriya is one great actress. Love the Nilaa, Nee Vaanam Kaatru song.
3. Siva Manasula Sakthi – Jeeva amazed me. He was a natural playing Siva. I love everything about this movie.
4. Kungama Poovum Konjum Puravum – Poignant. Beautiful love songs. Oru Ooril being my fav.
5. Sarvam – This was perplexing one but nevertheless moderately decent. Trisha and Aarya rocked in those beautiful ethnic wear for the song Sirugugal.
6. Eeram – One distinctive Tamil movie. Some what spine-chilling. Listen to Mazhaiye Mazhaiye.
7. Unnai Pol Oruvan – Kamal Haasan as the common man. One of those movies which will make you sit upright and see the world with a different view. Loved the ending, and the suspense.
8. Others worth mentioning – Abhiyum Naanum, Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, Nadodigal, Ayan, Yaavarum Nalam, TN 07 AL 4777, Anandha Thaandavam and Vaalmiki.

Song of the day. See below.
May the weekdays move fast - just like this train song.

Mazhai Kaatru from Vedham

I am sort of lost today. Cannot find the song to suit my mood of the day. It has been super hot of lately. In many parts of the world. So, I want to listen to something about the cool and drenching rain. At least some form of rain would do.

Malligaiye Malligaiye from Ninaithen Vandhai

To my little sister who is getting engaged today. Best of luck and God bless you both - always.

Saturday, March 6, 2010

Sowkiyamaa from Sangamam

Am no fan of carnatic music, but this one is truly very pleasing. Lyrics that speak your heart out.

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Neyaa Pesiyathu from Thirumalai

The song speaks for itself. I mean, it sings for itself.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Intha Nimidam from Palikoodam

One that I remembered all of a sudden. I thought it was nice, and still think, it is !!!!

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Sippi Irukuthu from Varumai Neram Sivapu

Very popular back then. The movie dealt with poverty. The dialogues in the song were intelligently inserted and flow very well with the entire song. Beautiful.
